Leading through disruption: strategies for thriving under bold transformational leadership

Written by Patrick Bermingham - 2 minute read

2025 has begun with continuing shifts in geo-politics, with perhaps the most noticeable being the adoption in the US of a ‘shock and awe’ approach, which refers to the use of overwhelming actions to achieve swift and decisive outcomes.

For business leaders, the concept applies to bold, transformative moves that disrupt norms and drive rapid results. Whilst impactful, there are also significant risks with this approach, which places unique pressures on leaders and their teams, requiring specific strategies to navigate effectively whilst also maintaining necessary governance and organisation stability.

Decision-making under pressure

The fast-paced nature of such leadership often leaves little time for deliberation. Senior leaders must analyse incomplete information, prioritise competing objectives, and make decisive choices, all whilst managing uncertainty. They can benefit from breaking down complex challenges into actionable steps to maintain focus and clarity under pressure. Research by Watkins (2013) highlights that effective decision-making in high-pressure situations often involves “simplifying priorities and encouraging collaborative input”.

Responding when values are tested

Bold leadership often pushes boundaries, forcing other leaders to confront decisions that may conflict with their principles and the organisation’s values. The ability to align organisational priorities with ethical values-aligned behaviour is essential to maintain credibility and trust both for senior leaders and their teams. According to Bersin (2020), leaders who balance bold decision-making with integrity strengthen their relationships with teams and stakeholders.

Managing team dynamics

Navigating through sweeping changes can cause tension, uncertainty and resistance in organisations. Transparent communication is essential to address concerns and ensure alignment with the broader vision. Clearly articulating the rationale for changes and supporting employees in adapting to new realities builds engagement, aligning the “head, heart and guts” of the organisation. (Oliver Wyman, 2023).

Skills for thriving

Ultimately, thriving under ‘shock and awe’ leadership requires clear communication, adaptability and the courage to act decisively whilst remaining grounded in the organisation’s values. Those who pay attention to these skills can turn pressure and disruption into opportunities for lasting success. Leaders who anticipate challenges, balance short-term and long-term goals, and demonstrate empathy drive greater resilience and performance within teams and are more able to withstand disruption. (McKinsey 2022).
